Now might be time for me to get that movie theater membership because I’m already SAT for the new movies coming to theaters this September! Here’s my curated watchlist filled with fresh, exciting stories.

September 2

Fall 2: Deadpoint

Starring Arsema Thomas

A sequel to Fall (2022), this movie follows two daring young women, Jax and Luce as they climb Mount Kwan in Thailand. This dangerous adventure forces them to face their fears, especially when they find themselves trapped and stranded 4,000 feet up. Yes, this is some WPS—and yes, you should watch it!

SEPTEMBER 4

By Any Means

Starring Yahya Abdul-Mateen, Nicole Beharie, Giancarlo Esposito, LisaGay Hamilton

Set in the 1960s, an FBI agent is sent to Mississippi to investigate the murders of civil rights leaders. Circumstances force the agent to work alongside a notorious mafia hitman, making the line between justice and vengeance hazy.

Something to know before you decide to watch this movie: Mark Wahlberg is starring as the hitman who’s investigating hate crimes. Due to his past, for a lot of people that is understandably a dealbreaker.

I personally haven’t decided whether I’d watch, but I hate that they casted him alongside some of our beloved actors. Nicole, Yahya, and Giancarlo would have seen me otherwise! No doubt about it.

SEPTEMBER 4

Dreams in Nightmares

Starring Denée Benton, Dezi Bing, Sasha Compère, Mars Storm Rucker, Jasmin Savoy

In this film, a queer friend group in their 30s goes on a road trip across the Midwest to look for their friend who suddenly disappeared. On this journey, they find themselves navigating love, identity, and belonging. I’m super excited to see this one!

SEPTEMBER 11 (SELECT THEATERS)

Black Zombie

Starring Zandashé Brown, Tananarive Due

Just as spooky season is rolling in, ‘Black Zombie’ is here to teach us the true origins of the zombie. This documentary takes us on a journey through cinema and history uncovering the Haitian roots of zombies, and how they transformed into Hollywood’s favorite monster.

‘Black Zombie’ is in select theaters September 11th. As someone who has heard about the Haitian history of zombies on a surface level—I’m intrigued! I hope there are showtimes near me because I’m ready for this deep dive!

SEPTEMBER 18

If I Go Will They Miss Me

Starring Danielle Brooks, J. Alphonse Nicholson, Bodhi Dell

This movie follows a 12-year-old boy as he struggles to reconnect with his father after incarceration. Through mysterious visions and Greek mythology, this poetic father-son story explores Black family dynamics, forgiveness, generational trauma, and hope.

I have a strong feeling this is going to be great!

SEPTEMBER 25 (SELECT THEATERS)

Your Mother, Your Mother, Your Mother

Starring Mahershala Ali, Giancarlo Esposito, Tramell Tillman, Tiffany Boone

This action film follows Latif, a devout Muslim, loving father, and deadly assassin. After his wife dies, he decides to abandon his criminal career and focus on raising his children, but outside feuds force him back into the field.

Mahershala Ali spent more than a year training to play in Marvel’s new ‘Blade’ movie that got scrapped. I’m glad to see the sword training and preparation didn’t go to waste, this should be good!

‘Your Mother Your Mother Your Mother’ is in select theaters September 25th, with a wide release on October 9th.

SEPTEMBER 25

Buzzkill

Starring Aliyah’s Interlude, Kealeboga Masango

This horror comedy follows a group of sorority sisters that get trapped with a masked murder. In order to unlock memories that reveal the masked identity, party girl Nora must get drunk to recall before it’s too late.

‘Buzzkill’ is scheduled for immediate release on September 25th on Tubi—unlike the rest of the movies listed which have theatrical releases. If you’re not a theater goer, this one’s for you!
