EXPLANATION
In May 2025, the South Sudanese government served an eviction notice to LGBTQ+ refugees and asylum seekers in the Gorom Settlement Camp. South Sudan hosts over half a million refugees across East Africa, with one of the camps, Gorom, hosting over 16,000 refugees. Out of those thousands, around 500 are openly LGBTQ+, and they’ve been forced to vacate, leaving them with less protections and support from the UN refugee agency, UNHCR.
