By now, it’s pretty obvious that people have a tendency to judge books by their covers, and I’m definitely guilty of doing that with TV shows! When I first came across ‘ARK: The Animated Series’ my interests weren’t the slightest bit piqued, but out of pure boredom I clicked the show and when I saw a character reminiscent of Korra, I immediately tapped in! (No shame… hehe)

‘ARK’ follows 21st century paleontologist Helena Walker as she one day awakens on a mysterious island surrounded by the chaos of war, ruthless tyrants, and prehistoric beasts, A.K.A dinosaurs. The reason why her century is mentioned is because the island she’s at is ‘timeless’, in the sense that people from all different time periods have spawned there. This animated series is based off the hit adventure video game ‘Ark: Survival Evolved’.

There is a belief amongst the islanders that if they complete unique tasks and acquire special items, they’ll be granted power and the chance to go back to their time. This is the source of the war, division, and tyranny seen across the island. Helena very quickly figures out where she aligns, and we’re introduced to many fascinating characters and creatures of the island. There is never a dull moment, I loved watching every second of this show.

Their Korra and Asami Serve?

A major win for lesbians and sapphics, Helena is a lesbian and throughout the show we’re shown her romantic partners, one of them being Mei-Yin, a Chinese warrior from long before Helena’s time. Appearance wise, they remind me so much of Korra and Asami, I swear they were in kahoots with the Korra writers! Ha, but seriously their romance is refreshing compared to the usual queerbaiting, we finally get to witness genuine lesbian lovers.

After watching the show, I definitely have some interest in checking the game out. You can find the ARK on Paramount+ or Prime Video with a Paramount+ subscription. Good news, Part 2 is set to release this summer and I can’t wait to see my favorites again!
