Blood Like Magic is an Afro-futuristic YA novel set in Toronto that follows a teenage witch Voya, who is given a spine-chilling task: kill her first love in order to save her family’s magic. The problem, well besides murder, is that she doesn’t have a first love to kill and only has 3 months to complete this quest. Throughout the book we’re introduced to fascinating witch society, deep history, culture, romance, and a dysfunctional family of sorts.
Despite giving me a bit of a headache, this book is definitely worth the read. The world building is so exciting and thrilling—it’s a fun ride all the way, until, well… the ending throws a curveball. The romantic bits were cute too, even if I ultimately didn’t side with her “lover”. I can’t lie, never has a book had me PISSED for weeks, matter of fact– MONTHS like this book here. At the time I was reading, the second book was not yet released. After I finished, whenever the story crossed my mind, I’d get angry and think “when’s the next season?” Bro, I was so mad I forgot it’s a book. LOL.
I applaud the author for evoking such rage in me, that’s quite impressive. I didn’t know a sequel had been released, I’ve got to get my hands on it, but I need a refresher! As of now, the anger I felt is long gone but I’m sure it’ll come back after a re-read. I still can’t believe the MC did what she did, but if it’s fixed somehow in the sequel… maybe I’ll stop holding a grudge. But I’m sorry she still dead wrong for what she did. Yuck.
Side note: I have a wig that looks exactly like the MCs hair. I lowkey want to recreate the cover hehe.
