The film Atlantics depicts two lovers, Ada and Souleiman, who yearn to be together but face many obstacles. I came for the romance but was pleasantly surprised by the supernatural aspect!
Far from a sappy romance, Atlantics (2019) explores themes of corruption and societal challenges, shedding light on the important issues that inevitably shape Ada and Souleiman’s love story. The film turns supernatural when ghosts of the past emerge, set on delivering justice for those who’ve suffered at the hands of people in power.
There are electrifying moments, but Atlantics isn’t what I’d describe as fast paced. Instead, it prioritizes thought-provoking storytelling by using long shots to convey emotions and the overall atmosphere. The Atlantic Ocean is a significant example of this and is shown many times throughout the film, without a doubt inspiring the title. It’s poetic to me, and if I could describe it, this movie feels like an opera— simultaneously hopeful, melancholic, and dramatic. The supernatural aspect flowed beautifully and didn’t feel unnatural to the story, it just belonged.
The cast is everything and more, I really loved seeing so many beautiful Darkskin people on screen. My only critique is that there wasn’t adequate screentime for the romance, it would’ve been amazing if the viewers had more time to observe their love before the chaos. Nevertheless, I adore this movie and wish I’d seen it sooner.
Atlantics, set in Dakar, Senegal, is Mati Diop’s film debut. I’m definitely on board for whatever she does next, this was lovely!
